Resources for refugees in the wake of Hurricane Harvey
By Sheetal Dhir, Senior Campaigner, Crisis & Tactical Response, Amnesty International USA
In the wake of Hurricane Harvey we’ve seen myriad images of devastation, witnessed brilliant acts of humanity and heard stories of heart wrenching suffering. Many groups on the ground are working to ensure that communities in need are not overlooked by mainstream media and our federal providers. One group we’re talking about: Mothers, fathers, and children who have come to the U.S. in search of safety and freedom from persecution. Some lack documentation or English fluency, and their access to resources is limited.
Here are groups that can help this population in need. Thank you to Refugee Council USA for compiling the information:
There are five refugee resettlement agencies in Houston. They will be providing information soon on ways to help out, including on Facebook:
• Alliance for Multicultural Community Services
• Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese Galveston-Houston
• Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston
Here are also a few general relief funds set up for both immediate disaster assistance and long-term services:
• Mayor of Houston Harvey Relief Fund
• United Way Houston Relief Fund
